PUBG stands for ‘PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’. The game is made by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of Bluehole Inc. PUBG Corp. was established in January last year with one goal in mind. To bring the Battle Royale experience that had been popularised by mods of Arma 3 and H1Z1 over to the modern age. “We feel that Battle Royale is a game genre that has been under served in the current market,”. Chang Han Kim, CEO of PUBG Corp., said. “There’s a lot on the line as we try to expand this out into becoming a global eSport, so we’re very careful about the types of partners we work with and how we distribute our game.”

If you think that PUBG Corp. is simply riding on the coattails of Bluehole’s ARMA Series and their upcoming title Fortnite, you are sorely mistaken. PUBG Corp. has contracted the services of developers from all over the world to ensure that Battlegrounds features incredible gunplay and self-balancing gameplay mechanics. Chang Han Kim would go on to say that they hoped to follow in the footsteps of Riot Games. Who have seen their League of Legends turn into one of the largest eSports in the world. It providing sustainable yearly profits to an otherwise struggling company. Kim feels that Battlegrounds has all the makings of a successful eSports game.

What is Battle Royale?
The term ‘Battle Royale’ comes from a movie written by Koushun Takami and directed by Kinji Fukasaku. In the film, a class of junior high school students are taken to an island where they must fight each other till only one remains alive.
The movie had a huge following in Asia and was notable for its similarities with William Golding’s Lord of the Flies . It had been suggested that the book would have been much more popular if it had featured elements of Battle Royale . The film’s influence on the gaming industry has been massive.
Recently, PlayerUnknown was interviewed about how he came up with the idea for Battlegrounds : “I have always loved zombie/co-op survival games and I also enjoyed playing Battle Royale mods on Arma 2 and Arma 3, as well as DayZ. I just thought ‘wouldn’t it be interesting to combine those two and make a game with no separate solo/co-op and no zombies. Just 100 players fighting each other to the death in an open map.”

History of PUBG
Back in 2001, the year Battlegrounds was officially announced to the world at an event in Seoul, South Korea. At that time it was known as ‘The Day of Defeat’ and had already been available for two years on American university networks. PlayerUnknown himself had modded Arma 2 , adding his own rules and varying the number of players that could compete. By the end, Battlegrounds had around 50 000 concurrent players.
The Day of Defeat mod for Arma 2 PlayerUnknown went on to become an integral part of Bluehole Studio’s development team. It was his idea to make a spin-off game based on the Day of Defeat mod. So Battlegrounds was born. At the time, PlayerUnknown’s involvement didn’t go beyond an advisory capacity. He felt that such a project should be handled by Bluehole staff who were dedicated to ensuring it would be a success.

In just four months Bluehole have managed to take a mod from Arma 2 and turn it into a complete, graphically stunning new IP.
PlayerUnknown on Battlegrounds : “I’ve always wanted to make a game that would stand out in terms of gameplay, and I can proudly say that we have succeeded in doing so with Battlegrounds . I hope everyone will enjoy our game when it finally comes out.”
PlayerUnknown on the DayZ/H1Z1 clones : “The funny thing is , when DayZ came out, everyone said it was my fault for releasing DayZ too early. But now that hundreds of clones have come out, there is not a single peep about it being my fault. That’s because I didn’t clone DayZ , I simply made an Arma 2 mod.”

At one point, it was slated to become a third-person shooter , much like Ubisoft’s I Am Alive . Meanwhile, the DayZ clone trend has spread across Asia, with large companies like TENCENT releasing their own version, “King of the Kill” .
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is expected to be released sometime this year and will cost $29.99 (US) on Steam . The game will require a steady 15Mbps download speed in order to play since it weighs around 5GB.
