The Rock’s Early Life
Johnson’s birth name is Dwayne Michael Johnson but he is known professionally by the ring name The Rock. He was born to Janie Johnson, a former waitress and secretary who raised him and his older brother Chad Johnson.[9] He was named after his maternal grandfather, whose name was “The Rock“.[10] Johnson grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and his father was a truck driver. At age 11, he started wrestling. He earned his second degree black belt in the Los Angeles Police Department’s Golden State Officers’ Training Academy before making his pro wrestling debut.[11]
His father died in a motorcycle accident when Johnson was a teenager.
The Rock’s Professional Wrestling Career
Wrestling as Rocky Maivia,[7] Johnson began wrestling in 1993, but left the business shortly after being trained by former professional wrestler and wrestling promoter Stu Hart.[7] During his brief run in wrestling, Johnson managed to win a few championships. He had a very public rivalry with Bret Hart which climaxed with a showdown at the 1994 Royal Rumble where they fought to a no-contest.[9] Johnson competed in the 1995 King of the Ring tournament, but lost in the first round to Marty Jannetty.[10]
Johnson began his acting career in 1995 with a small role in Stone Cold, alongside future WWE colleague The Rock. He also had a role in Play it to the Bone, a 1996 film starring Nick Nolte and Sting which he filmed when he was still wrestling as Rocky Maivia.

The Dwayne Johnson Brand
Early life
Johnson was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Samoan parents—a pipe fitter who owned a coffee shop, and his mother, who was a nurse—and raised in nearby Fullerton.[9] He is of mostly Samoan descent.[10][11]
Johnson has described himself as “the ‘popular’ one” in his family, and grew up as an overweight, socially awkward kid, who could not relate to his peers. He said that he gained 60 pounds (27 kg) in junior high school.[12] His first experience with a stage was when his elementary school music teacher, Mrs. Ruiz, made him one of the student actors in the musical Annie. Johnson made the principal’s list at his high school, and graduated in 1990.[13] In high school, he had developed a chip on his shoulder, and refused to interact with other kids.
Dwayne Johnson the Family Man
Born in Missouri, Dwayne Johnson is the son of Donna Jean née Siler, a schoolteacher who taught and coached wrestling for seventeen years,[2] and Dwayne Johnson the Wrestler, a former professional wrestler and member of the U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team,[9] who was known by his ring name The Rock.[10] Johnson first wrestled in his high school gym and was crowned in the world championships in Lincoln, Nebraska, and was part of the 1986 Greco-Roman Olympic Trials, the highest level of amateur wrestling in the United States.
In 1990, he became the first wrestler to ever win back-to-back U.S. freestyle championships, and at that year’s national championships, he defeated Olympic bronze medalist Kevin Jordan, the reigning two-time champion, in the finals of the 165-pound division.
