Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York, on July 24, 1967. She has three brothers and a sister.
The Lopez family is of Mexican descent. Jennifer’s mother, Guadalupe Rodríguez, was a former dancer who was an alcoholic. Jennifer’s father, Guillermo, worked as a construction worker. As a result, the family lived in a third-floor walk-up apartment in the Spanish Harlem area of New York.
Jennifer’s first job was at 7-Eleven, where she was the cashier. She later worked at retail stores including Payless, Mattel and Mack’s.
She attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York City and the Joffrey Ballet School. She earned a degree in drama from Carnegie Mellon University and then studied musical theater at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting.

The mother of two was discovered by the Prince music producer at a Blockbuster store, where she was working as a clerk. Lopez was signed to a development deal with Prince’s Paisley Park Records and released her self-titled debut album Jennifer Lopez in 1989.
Lopez won a Golden Globe in 1992 for her role in the drama Selena, then starred in a string of box-office hits like Out of Sight, The Wedding Planner, and A Little Princess. Her performance in Maid in Manhattan earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
In her 20’s, Lopez struggled with addiction, as well as a longstanding battle with depression and insecurity.
