Care can be difficult, for all parties involved. Thus, taking a break is as beneficial as it is important! Not only does this help maintain positive family and carer relationships, but this provides individuals with the opportunity to meet new people and experience new things outside of their daily routine.
Short term accommodation and Respite care can provide refreshment and recovery time to reduce the risk of burnout. These services take many forms and can be challenging to navigate. Here we will help you understand what short term accommodation is.
What Is Short Term Accommodation?
Put simply, STA is support where someone with a disability has a short stay away from their home to give both participant and career a well-deserved break to wind down and reset.
Short term accommodation can be given in emergency situations or planned in advance. By staying in short-term accommodation, participants are treated to a change of scenery and a break from routine, while their informal support network also gets some time to themselves.
STA Benefits
Temporary, short-term care is often an essential part of a care plan that benefits both the carer and participant. To ensure they are able to provide the best possible care to their loved one, it is important that carers look after their own health and wellness. As such, short term accommodation gives them the opportunity to catch up on sleep, address health issues, or simply (and most importantly) time to relax.
However, carers are not the only ones who benefit! Short Term Accommodation and respite is a fantastic opportunity for people with disabilities to meet new friends, develop new skills, build their independence and experience things they wouldn’t otherwise.
Despite the name, short term accommodation is more than simply a place to stay; it also includes the assistance and support you receive while there. These include personal care and hygiene, cooking, and other activities. Many STA providers offer individual and group skill building activities such as art therapy sessions, fitness activities and day trips.
STA and NDIS Funding
Short Term Accommodation in the NDIS is funding for support and accommodation for away from home and covers the cost of this care. There are 3 levels of support available, including:
Level 1: 7 to 14 days per year. Here careers are able to attend key activities.
Level 2: 14 to 28 days. This includes strategies and support to build future independence.
Level 3: The Equivalent of 28 days per year when a carer provides support most days. As such a carer is at risk of burn out due to the intensity of the care or behavioural issues.
