The 2020 NBA season was the strangest and most unexpected season in professional basketball history. In fact, it’s no exaggeration to say that this has been one of the strangest seasons in all of professional sports. This year’s NBA season has been truly unconventional and interesting, at least after the COVID-19 pandemic stopped, the playoffs were split, and sports fans were at a loss for what to expect.

Not only did the corona virus freeze all games until the end of August, but now that the NBA has decided to move up the playoff schedule, it’s been quite a strange experience to pick up where you left off and watch the game. The virus is still very widespread, so fans are still unable to join the game, especially in the US (where most of these games are played). That alone would be cumbersome enough to watch a game on television without an audience. But what the NBA did (and probably the only thing it can do) made the experience even more surreal.

Instead of showing two NBA teams playing video games against each other in an empty stadium, the NBA decided to allow fans to participate in the game through video chat. Instead of seeing thousands of fans walk away when a player reaches 3, a few sit in front of the camera and react (mostly with their facial expressions). This significantly lowered the NBA rating, especially during the playoffs. 

It turns out that watching professional basketball isn’t the same as long as the crowd isn’t rooting for the team and generating obvious energy and excitement. And so far, the NBA playoffs have resumed.

This is a weird and noisy time for the NBA (and the world), but I don’t see it as a reason not to watch this year’s NBA playoffs. I think all of this makes the playoffs even more attractive and unpredictable. It really is a game for everyone right now. Pros and professionals have little value this year. I can’t wait to compete with my team and this time I will see who the champion becomes.
