Malva dessert is a wonderful pudding of Cape Dutch origin, generally offered warm with some ice-cream or maybe custard. It is made with orange or apricot jam and has actually a squishy-spongy caramelized texture. You would be able to find this dessert treat on the dessert menu of most South African dining establishments.
The dessert’s name is derived from the Malvasia wine of the Island of Maderia on the coast of Portugal. This delicious South African dessert is usually served with the malvasia wine after dinner. It originated in the Cape with numerous one-of-a-kind additions which might vary from one location to the next, for example instead of using apricot jam you can use ginger or orange jam. There are so many variations of this pudding, particularly, the Cape Brandy Dessert which contains dates and brandy. Who can forget the Tipsy Tart which alsoincludes brandy? (South African Tipsy tart is my personal favorite!)
This Malva Dessert recipe below has been around for many years and is extremely popular, but if you want something different you can find different recipes online or in various South African cookbooks.
How to make a traditional South African Malva Pudding
Ingredients you will need to make a Malva Pudding
- One and half cup of flour.
- A half cup of brown sugar.
- Two teaspoons baking powder.
- Two large eggs.
- A pinch of salt.
- One tsp baking soda.
- Three teaspoons smooth orange jam.
- Two teaspoons melted butter.
- 3/4 mug of milk
What you need to make the sauce:
- Two cups of brown sugar
- Two cups of boiling water.
- Ten ml of vanilla essence.
- Two tins of ideal milk.
Malva Pudding Instructions
First you need to sift the flour, the baking powder, brown sugar and salt into a bowl.
Now you need to add the eggs, the baking powder, the jam, butter and milk.
Next you mix all the active ingredients.
Place this delicious concoction into a baking pan and bake it for 25 minutes at 180 Celsius.
The dessert will be baked until its brown and when you are ready to test, a blade should come out clear when you press the knife into the desert.
While the dessert is in the stove, ready the sauce by adding the sugar, water, vanilla essence and the tin of ideal milk into a microwavable bowl.
Now microwave all these substances until the sugar has liquefied and have dissolved.
As soon as it’s ready you can pour the warm sauce over the dessert bit by bit. You will notice that the soft sponge of the cake will soak up the appealing sauce. This may take a couple of minutes for your pudding to absorb all the sauce. It may help if you jab a few openings in the pudding with a blade to make sure more sauce is being taken in.
The amount of the sauce in this dessert instructions are double the amount for this dessert. The reason for this is that my family and I rather enjoy a moist and saucy Malva Dessert. If you do not, you can half the quantities of the malva-pudding sauce.
Hopefully you guys will enjoy the simplicity of this Malva Pudding recipe. It truly is so simple to make, and I believe you will put a wide smile on many people’s faces when you place this delicious South African recipe in front of them!
