Masjid al-Suqya is a mosque situated within the Anbariya rail station, two kilometers from Masjid-e-Nabwi. When the Prophet (S.A.W) was on his way to the Battle of Badr, he halted here to do ablution and pray Namaz. He then prayed for the safety of Madinah’s adherents and deployed his army. The Prophet (S.A.W) stayed here on Sunday, the 12th of Ramadhan 2 AH, which corresponds to March 13th, 624 CE. The Muslims were on their way to apprehend a trading caravan led by Abu Sufyan bin Harb (who was not a Muslim at that time). It was mainly composed of 40 soldiers, 1000 camels, and commodities valued at approximately 50,000 dinars. The Muslim armed forces were mainly around 310 and 315 soldiers. There were only two horses, one of which was handled by Musaib bin Umair (R.A), who alternated with Zubayr ibn al-Awam (R.A). Another horse was handled by Miqdad ibn al-Aswad (R.A), who used to switch it with Sa’ad bin Khaytama (R.A). The four Sahaba, who got to share horses, rode ahead of the armed forces.
Many persons, were walking but the Prophet (S.A.W) also designated groups to ride the 70 camels they possessed among them. The Prophet (S.A.W) and the two individuals riding on the other flank of him, Ali and Abu Lubabah (R.A), were riding one camel interchangeably. The Prophet (S.A.W) was deeply worried about the Muslim army’s shortcomings. He prayed to Allah after weighing the odds and said, “O Allah! The Muslims are barefooted and only You can provide them with animals to ride on. They are hungry and only You can feed them. They are poor and only You can enrich them.”
Musaib bin Umair (R.A) was given the white standard by the Prophet (S.A.W). The Muhajireen were granted their respective standard, which had been held by Ali (R.A), whereas the Ansar’s standard was hoisted by Sa’d binMu’adh (R.A). In the absence of the Prophet’s (S.A.W) in Madinah, the blinded Sahabi Abdullah bin Ummi Maqtum (R.A) was entrusted to conduct the Salah.
A well belonging to Sa’ad bin Abi Waqqas (R.A) and was located to the south of Masjid al-Suqya, close beyond the train station’s border wall. On his route to the battle of Badr, the Prophet (S.A.W) bathed in its water. Water was also fetched from this location for him to drink.
Throughout the Caliphate of Umar (R.A), the Prophet’s (R.A) uncle, Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (R.A), was requested to conduct the Istisqaa prayer (a particular supplication for rain) here. Masjid al-Suqya was initially established by Umar bin Abdul Aziz (R.A) and was repaired under King Fahd’s reign.
The Prophet (S.A.W) also prayed for Barakah (blessings) for Madinah here. There are several versions of this Du’a, and the one used at the time might be the following.
Abdullah bin Zaid bin ’Asim (R.A) narrated that the Messenger of Allah said,
“Ibrahim declared Makkah as a Haram (Sanctuary) and made supplication for its people, and I declare Madinah to be a Haram just as Ibrahim declared Makkah as a Haram, and I made supplication for its Mudd and Sa’, just as Ibrahim made supplication for the people of Makkah.” Agreed upon.
