Under the government’s Plan for Jobs, anyone 19 or older can now take advantage of a free course. Included in the free training are credentials up to level three and Skills Bootcamps. The National Skills Fund, through which the government pays for the classes, serves as the funding source.

What exactly is Universal Credit?

Eligibility to get enrolled in free colleges
- If you’re 19 or older and don’t already have a level 3 qualification (equivalent to an advanced technical certificate or diploma, or A levels), you can enrol in a free level 3 qualification.
- Some of these certifications can be studied part-time or online, and you may be eligible for financial aid to help with childcare, travel, and other expenses. Admissions criteria for the course you want to apply for may require you to meet certain requirements. For example, you may need to have studied a specific subject at a lower level before.
- You used to have to pay the course cost if you were 24 or older to obtain these qualifications. Now, there is a plethora of educational institutions and training programs available.
- Those between the ages of 19 and 23 are eligible for a discount on further qualifications. If you’re between the ages of 18 and 24, talk to your local community college or the National Careers Service for more information.
- If you already hold a level 3 qualification, an advanced learner loan is available to assist you to cover the costs of learning, which you pay back when you earn over a set amount.

You will not be charged for your level 3 qualification if you are eligible. The National Skills Fund will cover the cost of the training.
- Use the National Careers Service course finder to check what free courses are available to you, either locally or online. You can decide how far you’re willing to go.
- Check with the college or training provider to see if they offer the qualification you’re interested in, review the admissions requirements, and then apply for the course as normal.
- You will not be charged a course fee if you are accepted for the course. You may also be eligible for assistance with child care, transportation, and other expenses.
Courses that can be used to earn college credit
Only four credit degree courses are allowed to be recommended for college credit out of the five courses available:
- Pre-Calculus at the University of California, Irvine
- Duke University’s Genetics and Evolutionary Theory Introduction
- Duke University’s Measurement Method for Bioelectricity
- Calculus is taught in a variety of ways at Penn State.
- And the development of credit recommendations for math is permitted in one course.
Your Universal Credit and student income
You may receive less Universal Credit if you are a student.
The amount of Universal Credit you receive each month is determined by your circumstances for the previous month. This period is known as your ‘assessment period.’
However, your student income will not be deducted from your Universal Credit if you meet the following conditions:
- Summer vacation begins on the first day of the assessment period;

- Paying back student loans
If you get a student loan, you might be eligible for Universal Credit. Student loans come in a variety of forms, each with its own set of rules.
When calculating your Universal Credit, any loan amount intended to cover tuition fees and other study-related costs will be excluded.

You will not be assessed if you are receiving Universal Credit and you receive a student grant for any of the following purposes:
- fees for classes and exams
- your incapacity
- expenses associated with residential education conducted away from a school
- being away from your usual study location
- upkeep of a helpless adult
- materials such as books and equipment
- the cost of travel
