Since 1782, since 1782, the Bald Eagle is the US’s national symbol. It has also been a symbol of spirituality for indigenous people for a long time. These regal birds aren’t really hairless, but their white-feathered heads shine in stark contrast to their chocolate-brown bodies and wings. It is possible to see them flying by themselves and hunting birds for food, or swarming in large quantities in winter. They were once threatened by hunting and pesticides, Bald Eagles have flourished under protection.

Rather than do the fishing themselves, Bald Eagles often go after the fish of other species. Bald Eagles can chase smaller Osprey looking for prey until it is suspended in mid-air by the bird that is smaller. The eagle then swoops over the fish. A Bald Eagle might even grab an entire fish right from an Osprey’s talons. Bald Eagle pirates may also be detrimental to fish-catching mammals and humans.

Had Benjamin Franklin prevailed, the U.S. emblem might have been Wild Turkey. Franklin wrote in 1784 that he disparaged the national bird for its predatory tendencies as well as its vulnerability to being harassed by small birds. “For my aspect,” he wrote, “I would rather the Bald Eagle would not have been selected as the representative of our Country. He is an unreliable Bird of moral calamity. He does not get his Living completely. … In addition, being the most infamous Coward A tiny King Bird not bigger than an Sparrow is a ruthless savage who attacks the man with ferocity and exiles him from the district.”

Sometimes even the national bird must be cut down. Bald Eagles are known to play with plastic bottles as well as other objects that were put into use as toys. One observer saw six Bald Eagles pass sticks in midair between each other.

Immature Bald Eagles spend the initial four years of their lives exploring nomadic areas of vast territories and can travel hundreds of miles every day. A few young birds from Florida have wandered north to Michigan while birds from California have landed in Alaska.

Bald Eagles occasionally hunt cooperatively, with one individual flushing prey towards another.

Bald Eagles can live for a very long duration. The oldest bird recorded in the wild was at least 38 years old at the time it was hit and killed by a vehicle in New York in 2015. The bird was first banded in the same area in 1977.
