Learning something is not as easy as it may seem, especially if you are an International student and have cultural, language and time differences. You have to develop good learning habits to learn better and fast.
To start off, you must have a strong motivation and commitment to learning. In the post-COVID world where online learning has become the new norm, this has become even more important. Because there is no compulsion or the lure of a reward, it’s easy to lose motivation or get lazy when you have to learn online. I struggled with this a lot as I am on my journey to learn Quran online.
I am sharing the tips based on my personal experience as an online learner. Following the tips, you can overcome your obstacles and have a better chance for success.
- Specify a Daily Learning Time
Make a plan for studying at a specific time each day. Choose a time that works best for you and stick to it. Don’t change your time frequently. Don’t miss your study even if you have something more important. Of course, practicing it the first month will be difficult but be consistent and make learning a part of your daily routine.
- Set a Daily Goal
Create a specific goal for each study session. Decide what you have to take out of each lesson. This will expedite your learning and make you stay focused. For example, I figure how many Ayahs I will do in each class of my online hifz course. I then try my best to complete it even If I have to add a little extra time. Keep in mind, the goal should be attainable and realistic.
- Take Notes
Make it a habit to have a pen and paper and take notes during the session. Note down every small detail even details that may seem obvious or easy at the time. Review the notes when you are practicing. It will refresh the things and make you better prepared for the next session. Always begin each session by reviewing your notes from previous session.
- Remove Distractions
Distractions are the most common issue in online learning. Make sure you keep all possible distractions away while starting your session. Sign out from all social media accounts and turn off your cell phone. Tell your family members not to disturb you while you are in the class. If possible, do your study in an isolated place where there are no distractions.
- Do Your Assignments
Don’t miss or get late on your assignments. They are for your benefits. Take interest in them and complete them before their deadlines. Assignments augment your learning and make it stay for longer. Good and on time assignments also make a good impression on your teachers and they start teaching and treating you with more interest.
- Care for Your Health
Effective learning requires a healthy body and mind. You won’t be able to learn at all if you are sick or suffer from injuries or poor health. There are a few things you can do to maintain a good health and sharp memory. The most important is sleep. Try to get sufficient sleep. Lack of sleep will make you lethargic and unfocused. Going to bed early and waking up early is a good practice. Next comes your eating habits. Eat less and right. Do exercise or get involved in some sort of physical activity. All these things will keep you healthy and make you a better learner.
- Create a Support Network
A support network is immensely important. What I mean by a support network is that you have friends, teachers, or advisers to turn to when you face an issue. You can turn to your support network when you feel frustrated or overwhelmed. These people not only help you with your study but also restore your motivation and build your confidence.
Conclusion
In an age where there is so much to learn and where you are bombarded with so much information every single day, it’s important that you absorb and learn effectively. The above tips have helped me achieve this and I am sure it will help you too.
