French is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and is the official language of many countries. It will not only help students in communicating with people from other countries but also give them a better understanding of the culture and way of life in those nations. The Delhi government has decided to introduce French-language education in its schools from the next academic session. The move is aimed at providing students with an opportunity to learn another language and also help them become familiar with the culture of another country.
French will be introduced as a third language in the curriculum of classes 6 to 8 in all Delhi government schools. Students who wish to study French will have to opt for it as an additional subject. The move is part of the Delhi government’s efforts to promote foreign language education in the city.
At present, around 1,200 students are already learning French in 35 schools under the Delhi government’s ‘Mission Convergence’ project. With the introduction of French-language education in all Delhi government schools, the number of students learning the language is expected to increase manifold. Currently, only a handful of private schools in the city offer French as a second language. But with this move, Delhi will become the first state in India to offer French education in government schools. Education minister Manish Sisodia made the announcement at an event organised by the French embassy in Delhi.
“We have decided that from the next academic year, every student in Delhi government schools will get an opportunity to study French language,” Sisodia said.
He said that the decision was taken keeping in mind the “growing importance” of the French language globally.
The French embassy has welcomed the Delhi government’s decision and has offered to provide assistance in implementing the project. Education attaché at the Embassy of France, Philippe Loranger, said that they are ready to provide expertise and resources to make this project a success.
The move will also go a long way in promoting cultural exchange between India and France. French is already being taught as a foreign language in several schools across India. However, this is the first time that it will be introduced as a third language in the curriculum of Delhi government schools.The move is in line with the Delhi government’s goal of providing quality education to all its students. It will also help in making the city’s students more competitive in the global job market.
