As someone who did not grow up in snow during the holidays, I appreciated moving to Colorado. I would finally have a proper winter holiday environment and would not consider rain to be winter weather. But the reality is never exactly like your imagination. While I was about the prospect of finally having a white Christmas, I discovered that I wouldn’t say I like driving in snow. Even if I drive, the possibility of sliding off the road exists. Being in the snow is fantastic…if RAS or someone else is driving.
Snowy weather adds to the holiday atmosphere, but it’s difficult to get into the holiday spirit when it’s not there. As of this writing, no measurable snow has fallen in the Denver metropolitan area, despite the fact that it is already mid-December. Even if the weather isn’t cooperating, there are plenty of things to do in Denver to get into the holiday spirit (i.e., snowing). Here are seven examples:

- THE TABLE MOUNTAIN INN
Table Mountain Inn is the ideal place to stay during your visit to Golden. It has been a Golden hotel since 1925 and is in historic downtown. The Santa Fe-style hotel now provides luxury with a southwestern flair. Their spacious guest rooms feature stylish furnishings, luxurious bedding, and spectacular views of Golden. The Table Mountain Inn is out in holiday cheer during the holiday season. The Table Mountain Cantina & Grill, its restaurant, is popular with locals who come for its daily brunch and excellent southwest cuisine. Table Mountain Cantina offers several plant-based options, including a chipotle roasted cauliflower dish and an ancient grain salad.
- FOOTHILLS ART CENTER
The Holiday Art Market at Foothills Art Center, housed in a Gothic church and manse, is the ideal place to find that one-of-a-kind gift for someone you care about. The market, which features a large selection of fine art and handmade goods, has something for everyone on your list. Over 100 local artists sell their wares here, ranging from woodworking to clothing to special holiday items. Come in and select an original creation.
- CLEAR CREEK
The Clear Creek trail is popular with both locals and visitors all year. During the summer, the river is bustling with people floating down on inner tubes, kayakers, fishermen, and people sitting along the bank to take in the scenery. Clear Creek is with twinkling holiday lights during the Christmas season. Grab a cup of hot cocoa from one of the many coffee shops that line the main street and take a stroll along the river in the evening.

- THE OLDE GOLDEN CANDLELIGHT WALK
The Olde Golden Candlelight Walk is a long-standing Golden tradition held on the first Friday of December. It’s quite something to see the street lit up with thousands of candles. Arrive early and pick up some hot cocoa from a nearby shop. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with a pre-walk holiday show on the 10th and Washington stage. The crowd then gathers at the Foothills Art Center on 15th and Washington to begin the walk. Bring your own candle or buy one for $2 to join in the fun. This popular event features carolling and lots of laughter. Following that, one lucky Golden child will flip the switch, turning on all the twinkling lights along Clear Creek.
- GOLDEN HOLIDAY PARADE
The Golden Holiday Parade, held on the second Saturday of each month, features Newfoundland dogs, Victorian carolers, a variety of floats, the Grinch, marching bands, and even Buffalo Bill himself. This is a fantastic activity for children. Many organisations from the Golden community work together to make this holiday parade special.
- COLORADO RAILROAD MUSEUM
From mid-November to December 23rd, the Polar Express will visit the Colorado Railroad Museum. The Polar Express Train Ride is an attraction that takes place in the Polar Express Pavilion. The multi-part show features song and dance. The song “Hot Chocolate” is especially popular with children. The Polar Express will arrive, and the conductor will exclaim, “All aboard!” The night’s favourite experience is a trip to the North Pole aboard vintage coaches pulled by an authentic, coal-fired steam locomotive.
- LIT-UP HISTORY PARK
Golden’s History Park (Clear Creek History Park) is lit up for the holidays. The living history park, which is open year-round and has free admission, is home to several authentic 1800s-style buildings that were here from all over the county. They have been providing a glimpse into life in the Old West. Peer into a farmhouse kitchen to see the wood stove, or visit the schoolhouse to see how students used to learn. The park hosts a Hands-On History Summer Camp for children during the summer. The Golden History Museum, which is across the river, also has free admission and different exhibits throughout the year.
- FILMS ON THE ROCKS
During the summer, we locals enjoy watching movies at Red Rocks Amphitheater. In a drive-in, you can now watch holiday-themed films under the stars. Even if the temperature drops, you’ll be warm in your car. Remember to bring your own snacks and drinks.
- ZOO LIGHTS
During the holidays, you can walk around the wildlife exhibits at the Denver Zoo and see some of the most impressive arrays of lights. The event, which is now in its 30th year, is one of the most popular activities, so I recommend going during the week when the crowds will be smaller.
- CHRISTKINDIMARKE
If you can’t make it to Europe for the Christmas markets, come to Civic Center Park for a more local alternative. You can shop for one-of-a-kind German and European-themed holiday gifts while also enjoying German cuisine and beverages. Remember to try the traditional spiced mulled beverage Gluhwein.
