Ceramics is an ancient art form dating back to at least 20,000 BC. The world’s oldest pottery pieces have been found in present-day Iran and date back to as long ago as 9500 BC. In those days, the pots were made from a mixture of clay and water that was then fired into shape by heating it in a fire or kiln. Today, ceramics are still used for creating all sorts of objects including vases, tiles, sculptures, and much more!
Some people enjoy making crafts with their own hands because they find it therapeutic while others do it to make money or create useful items like utensils or tools for themselves or others. No matter why you choose to take up ceramic.
The world is just a little bit better when everyone is able to appreciate art and I think that ceramics can allow us all to open our minds and see the beauty in just about everything.
Here are 10 reasons why you should consider taking up pottery or any other kind of ceramic class singapore:
1. Can’t afford a therapist? Take up ceramics!
It’s true, some find the act of creating something with their own hands to be therapeutic. Ceramic work can also be relaxing and fun so it could just become your new hobby.
2. You don’t need to know how to draw or paint
I’m not sure about you but I’ve been drawing stick figures since I was four and I still can’t really draw. Well, at least not to the extent that I would like to be able to.
But you don’t need any special skills or talent in order to start making pottery. The only things that you’ll need are a little bit of artistic ability (ie: the ability to turn a lump of clay into something that looks vaguely like an elephant), some supplies, and a place to do it.
3. It gives you the chance to play with your food instead of just eating it!
There’s no doubt about it: we all love delicious food but ceramic can allow you to create beautiful pieces of art that you can then use to serve your food. You’ll get to enjoy the meal and then you’ll also get to enjoy your art afterward (which is kind of like having dessert first)!
4. It’s a great way for artists to express themselves
Artists often find that their true purpose in life is not solely about making money or having fun (although that’s nice too). Sometimes, clay is used to offer a glimpse of what is on someone’s mind or to share something very personal with the world.
5. Great for kids
Kids get excited about getting their hands dirty and making stuff so ceramic can make an excellent choice for children who like playing in the dirt (as my little sister would say).
6. Ceramic is a fun challenge!
You’ll get to work with wet and dry clay, heat it up, shape it into patterns and then fire it in the kiln so you can really build some skills and gain knowledge about how ceramics work at different temperatures and by using different techniques.
7. You don’t need a lot of space
I know how it is: apartment living and not enough space for even the littlest hobbies. Well, you can make all sorts of ceramics in your kitchen or on your balcony. You won’t need a garden shed filled with tools and equipment like some other forms of art (although if you do have one, that’s awesome too).
8. It can be done in groups or by yourself
You can do pottery all on your own but you can also take group classes to get help with learning new techniques and making friends who share the same interests as you.
9. It allows for creativity
The only limit is your imagination. You can create pretty much anything that you want out of clay and firing it in the kiln will help to harden your creation and make it permanent (well, unless you decide to destroy what you’ve made for some reason but I don’t think anyone’s going to do that).
10. There is a reward at the end
You can’t eat your pottery but you can use it to create something beautiful or useful and then you get to keep your creation so it’s certainly worth the effort!
And that’s all I’ve got for now. If you want to learn more about ceramics or if you are interested in learning how it works, there are lots of resources out there so go ahead and start researching!
That’s why I think everyone should try making pottery at least once in their life because the only thing better than using your ceramic creation is getting to show it to somebody else.
